Season two of Funny as Hell premiered on HBO Canada this past Friday night. Hosted by Jon Dore, the program features some of the funniest and most fearless comedians working today.
Holiday’s very own Toronto-based directorial duo Adam & Dave have been heavily involved with the show. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing a selection of some of the hilarious sketches from Funny As Hell, along with commentary on each from Adam & Dave.
Here’s a brief Q&A with Adam & Dave about the show and H.O.R.S.E., the first sketch which we are very pleased to share with you.
Q: Please tell me about your involvement in Funny as Hell.
Adam & Dave: We were the Creative Producers on Funny As Hell, meaning we helped contribute to the overall aesthetic and tone of the show, and gave the actual producers strong back-rubs. But most importantly, we directed and with the star Jon Dore, wrote all of the sketches that appear throughout the series.
Jon Dore, who is a dear old friend, but who is neither old nor a dear, starred in the first season on HBO Canada, and then he thought it would be a good idea to bring us on for Season 2. Big mistake bud.
Q: Please explain H.O.R.S.E. for any sports illiterate people out there.
Adam & Dave: For those not in the know, H.O.R.S.E. is the basketball trick shot game that stands for He Only Remembers Sad Experiences. It’s kind of like the A.D.I.D.A.S expression, except copyright free and more true.
Q: The spot starts off feeling like it’s going to be about one thing, and quickly turns into something completely and wonderfully different. Please discuss.
Adam & Dave: Well to us, that is like life. You think life is nothing but a “game”, and if you “score” that big “shot” you will “win”. But what happens in the real game of life, is that babies show up, and those babies need to get fed and basketball don’t pay the bills, unless you are exceptionally talented and make it to the pro league, in which case, it pays the bills and then some. In conclusion, keep practicing.
Q: If you had to describe this spot in 140 words or less (Twitter max), how would you?
Adam & Dave:
Did you ever play one-on-one basketball with Hannibal Buress and end up covered in afterbirth?
Or: A modern day take on the birth of Christ starring Hannibal Buress (Joseph) and Jon Dore (some Angel)
Q: Anything else we should know about this short?
Adam & Dave: Hannibal actually made that shot at the beginning but our camera battery died, so we had to put it together in the edit.
